Three Core Functions of Valve Surface Coatings
Barrier Protection
After coating the metal valve surface with paint, the substrate is isolated from the corrosive environment, which is defined as barrier protection. However, a single thin coating cannot achieve complete isolation. All polymer film-forming materials are breathable; micro-pores inside thin coatings allow water and oxygen molecules to penetrate freely. Therefore, strict thickness standards are enforced for epoxy coatings on soft-sealed valves.
Thin coatings deliver far weaker isolation performance compared with thick compact coatings. To boost coating impermeability, anti-corrosion paint should adopt low-permeability film-forming agents and high-shielding fillers. Multiple coating layers are required to reach the specified thickness and form a dense, pore-free protective film.
Inhibition Anti-Corrosion Effect
Functional ingredients inside the coating react with metal substrates to passivate the metal surface or form protective films, enhancing overall anti-corrosion performance. For valves customized for special working conditions, paint chemical composition must be carefully checked to avoid irreversible valve failure caused by incompatible media.
For cast steel valves used in oil pipelines, degradation products generated by the reaction between oil media and metallic soap driers in coatings serve as organic corrosion inhibitors to slow down metal oxidation.
Cathodic Electrochemical Protection
Once corrosive media and moisture penetrate the coating and reach the metal base, under-film electrochemical corrosion will occur. Fill the coating with metal powder more active than iron such as zinc to form a sacrificial anode protection system.
Corrosion products of zinc (basic zinc chloride and zinc carbonate) fill tiny gaps inside the coating, densify the protective film, restrain corrosion significantly and extend valve service life.
